DNSimple

DNSimple is a domain and DNS management service built for developers and teams, with a REST API, Terraform provider and integrations for automating domains, DNS records and SSL certificates. Anthony Eden started it in 2010 as a DNS tool and added domain registration after customers asked for it. The company is bootstrapped and has never taken outside funding.

DNSimple MCP

Lemon Domains is the unofficial DNSimple MCP server. Connect your DNSimple account by API once, and Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client can answer questions about your DNSimple domains next to the domains you hold at every other registrar. Connections start read only, so your AI changes only what you allow.

  • “Which of my DNSimple domains expire in the next 60 days?”
  • “Is auto-renew on for every domain at DNSimple?”
  • “Did the nameservers change on any of my DNSimple domains this week?”

Transferring a domain away from DNSimple

Open the domain and click Transfer Out in the registration section. DNSimple unlocks the domain and emails the code to the registrant contact.

Give the code to the new registrar to start the transfer. Most extensions can't move within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. DNSimple's guide

Connect DNSimple to Lemon Domains

Three steps: create a read-only API key at DNSimple, add it to Lemon Domains, and your domains sync once a day from then on. Connect as many DNSimple accounts as you have.

Step 1

Create a read-only API key at DNSimple

Give it the least access you can

On DNSimple's Teams plan or higher, create a scoped account token with read-only access to Domains. On the Solo plan tokens always have full access to the account, so create a separate token just for Lemon Domains so you can revoke it on its own.

  1. 1Sign in to DNSimple and open the account that holds your domains.
  2. 2Go to Account → Access tokens and choose “New access token” (an account token, not a user token).
  3. 3On the Teams plan or higher, choose scoped permissions and give the token read-only access to Domains only.
  4. 4Name it “Lemon Domains”, create it, and copy the token. It is only shown once.

Open DNSimple API settings

Step 2

Add it to Lemon Domains

  1. 1Sign in to Lemon Domains (it's free), open Connections and choose DNSimple.
  2. 2Give the connection a friendly name, like “DNSimple personal” or “DNSimple clients”. Connect each DNSimple account separately.
  3. 3Paste your access token.
  4. 4Click Test connection. Lemon Domains checks the API key and shows how many domains it can see, without saving anything.
  5. 5Tick the checkbox to confirm you understand the risks, pick the project new domains go into, and click Connect and import. Your domains appear straight away and sync once a day after that.
Step 3

What Lemon Domains reads

Synced once a day
  • Domain names (including internationalised names)
  • Status, such as active, expired or pending transfer
  • Expiry and registration dates
  • Whether auto-renew is on
  • WHOIS privacy
Read-only by design

Lemon Domains only ever sends read requests to DNSimple: each integration has a fixed list of read-only calls it may make, so it never renews, transfers or changes a domain. Your API key is encrypted at rest and never shown again.

If something goes wrong

DNSimple rejects the API key
Copy it again with no spaces at either end. Some registrars only show the secret once, so create a new key if you didn't save it.
The key has an IP restriction
Lemon Domains connects from 2.31.94.66. Add it to the API key's allowed IPs, or remove the restriction.
Some domains are missing
Make sure the API key belongs to the DNSimple account (or sub-account) that holds those domains. Connect each account separately.

Rather not use an API key? Import by paste or CSV

Copy your list from the DNSimple portal, paste it into Lemon Domains, and you're done. Re-import any time to refresh. Paste or CSV import needs no DNSimple credentials at all.

Open your DNSimple dashboard

  1. 1Open your DNSimple account at dnsimple.com and go to the domain list.
  2. 2If the list paginates, switch to "show all" or the largest page size so every DNSimple domain is visible.
  3. 3Copy the visible list, or export to CSV if DNSimple offers it from the account area.
  4. 4In Lemon Domains, click Import, paste the list or upload the CSV, and map the columns. Lemon Domains previews everything before it commits.
  5. 5Give the registrar account a friendly label (for example "DNSimple personal" or "DNSimple client work") so sub-accounts stay distinct.

Frequently asked questions

Does Lemon Domains support DNSimple domains?

Yes. Connect your DNSimple account with an API key and Lemon Domains syncs your domains automatically once a day. You can also import by pasting your domain list from the DNSimple dashboard or uploading a CSV export. Multiple DNSimple accounts are supported with friendly labels so sub-accounts stay distinct in the unified portfolio.

How do I get a DNSimple API key?

Sign in to DNSimple and open the account that holds your domains. Go to Account → Access tokens and choose “New access token” (an account token, not a user token). On the Teams plan or higher, choose scoped permissions and give the token read-only access to Domains only. Name it “Lemon Domains”, create it, and copy the token. It is only shown once. On DNSimple's Teams plan or higher, create a scoped account token with read-only access to Domains. On the Solo plan tokens always have full access to the account, so create a separate token just for Lemon Domains so you can revoke it on its own.

Do I need to share my DNSimple password?

No. Connecting by API uses an API key you create at DNSimple, not your password. On DNSimple's Teams plan or higher, create a scoped account token with read-only access to Domains. On the Solo plan tokens always have full access to the account, so create a separate token just for Lemon Domains so you can revoke it on its own. Keys are encrypted at rest. Lemon Domains only ever sends read requests. Or skip the API and paste your list or upload a CSV.

Can I track multiple DNSimple accounts?

Yes. Add one connection per DNSimple account, each with its own friendly name. Personal and business logins, sub-accounts, and client accounts all sit side by side in one dashboard.

Does Lemon Domains renew my DNSimple domains?

No. Renewal still happens at DNSimple. Lemon Domains tracks expiry dates and auto-renew status so you know exactly when to act, but the renewal button stays at DNSimple.

Can AI assistants query my DNSimple domains?

Yes. The Lemon Domains MCP server lets ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and any MCP client query your full portfolio, including DNSimple domains, in plain English. Choose read-only or read-and-write access for each token.

Is DNSimple ICANN-accredited?

Yes. DNSimple is on the ICANN list of accredited registrars, so it can register generic extensions such as .com directly with the registries.

What is DNSimple's IANA ID?

1730. The IANA registrar ID appears in the registrar field of a domain's public record, so it shows which registrar a domain is with.

What other names does DNSimple operate under?

Its accreditations are also held as DNSimple Registrar LLC. Domains registered through any of them can show those names as the registrar.

Is there an MCP server for DNSimple domains?

Yes. Lemon Domains connects to DNSimple by API and serves your DNSimple domains through its remote MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and any MCP client can answer questions about them. It is independent of DNSimple and not affiliated with it, so the same connection also covers your domains at every other registrar.

Does DNSimple have an API?

Yes. Lemon Domains connects to DNSimple by API and syncs your domain list every day, with expiry dates and renewal settings. Your AI assistant can then answer questions about those domains through the Lemon Domains MCP server.

What domain extensions does DNSimple sell?

DNSimple's price list has 614 extensions: 490 generic, 82 country-code and 42 second-level, as of October 2026. They include .com, .net, .org, .io, .ai, .co, .app, .dev, .xyz, .uk, .de and .eu. The full list is on this page.

Does DNSimple include WHOIS privacy?

Yes. DNSimple hides your contact details in the public record at no extra cost, for the extensions whose registry allows it. Some country-code extensions, such as .us, don't allow privacy at all.

How do I contact DNSimple support?

DNSimple offers support by email or tickets and help center. Its contact page is https://support.dnsimple.com/.

What does DNSimple offer besides domain names?

DNS hosting and SSL certificates.

How do I transfer a domain away from DNSimple?

Open the domain and click Transfer Out in the registration section. DNSimple unlocks the domain and emails the code to the registrant contact. Then give the code to the new registrar to start the transfer.
