IONOS MCP
Lemon Domains is the unofficial IONOS MCP server. Connect your IONOS account by API once, and Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client can answer questions about your IONOS domains next to the domains you hold at every other registrar. Connections start read only, so your AI changes only what you allow.
- “Which of my IONOS domains expire in the next 60 days?”
- “Is auto-renew on for every domain at IONOS?”
- “Did the nameservers change on any of my IONOS domains this week?”

Transferring a domain away from IONOS

Connect IONOS to Lemon Domains
Three steps: create a read-only API key at IONOS, add it to Lemon Domains, and your domains sync once a day from then on. Connect as many IONOS accounts as you have.
Create a read-only API key at IONOS
IONOS keys cannot be limited to read-only or to the Domains API: one key covers domains, DNS and SSL. Create a separate key just for Lemon Domains so you can delete it on its own.
The IONOS Developer API is for IONOS hosting and domain customers. Some contract types and regions may not have API access yet; if IONOS refuses the key, use CSV import instead.
- 1Sign in at developer.hosting.ionos.com with your IONOS customer login and open API Keys.
- 2If IONOS asks you to activate API access first, follow its steps (it is free).
- 3Create a new key named “Lemon Domains”.
- 4Copy the public prefix and the secret into the two fields in Lemon Domains. Both are needed. The secret is only shown once.
Add it to Lemon Domains
- 1Sign in to Lemon Domains (it's free), open Connections and choose IONOS.
- 2Give the connection a friendly name, like “IONOS personal” or “IONOS clients”. Connect each IONOS account separately.
- 3Paste your public prefix and secret.
- 4Click Test connection. Lemon Domains checks the API key and shows how many domains it can see, without saving anything.
- 5Tick the checkbox to confirm you understand the risks, pick the project new domains go into, and click Connect and import. Your domains appear straight away and sync once a day after that.
What Lemon Domains reads
- Domain names (including internationalised names)
- Status, such as active, expired or pending transfer
- Expiry and registration dates
- Whether auto-renew is on
- Transfer lock
- WHOIS privacy
Lemon Domains only ever sends read requests to IONOS: each integration has a fixed list of read-only calls it may make, so it never renews, transfers or changes a domain. Your API key is encrypted at rest and never shown again.
If something goes wrong
- IONOS rejects the API key
- Copy it again with no spaces at either end. Some registrars only show the secret once, so create a new key if you didn't save it.
- The key has an IP restriction
- Lemon Domains connects from 2.31.94.66. Add it to the API key's allowed IPs, or remove the restriction.
- Some domains are missing
- Make sure the API key belongs to the IONOS account (or sub-account) that holds those domains. Connect each account separately.
Rather not use an API key? Import by paste or CSV
Copy your list from the IONOS portal, paste it into Lemon Domains, and you're done. Re-import any time to refresh. Paste or CSV import needs no IONOS credentials at all.
Open your IONOS domain overview
- 1Open your IONOS account at ionos.com and go to the domain list.
- 2If the list paginates, switch to "show all" or the largest page size so every IONOS domain is visible.
- 3Copy the visible list, or export to CSV if IONOS offers it from the account area.
- 4In Lemon Domains, click Import, paste the list or upload the CSV, and map the columns. Lemon Domains previews everything before it commits.
- 5Give the registrar account a friendly label (for example "IONOS personal" or "IONOS client work") so sub-accounts stay distinct.

Frequently asked questions
Does Lemon Domains support IONOS domains?
Yes. Connect your IONOS account with an API key and Lemon Domains syncs your domains automatically once a day. The IONOS Developer API is for IONOS hosting and domain customers. Some contract types and regions may not have API access yet; if IONOS refuses the key, use CSV import instead. You can also import by pasting your domain list from the IONOS dashboard or uploading a CSV export. Multiple IONOS accounts are supported with friendly labels so sub-accounts stay distinct in the unified portfolio.
How do I get a IONOS API key?
Sign in at developer.hosting.ionos.com with your IONOS customer login and open API Keys. If IONOS asks you to activate API access first, follow its steps (it is free). Create a new key named “Lemon Domains”. Copy the public prefix and the secret into the two fields in Lemon Domains. Both are needed. The secret is only shown once. IONOS keys cannot be limited to read-only or to the Domains API: one key covers domains, DNS and SSL. Create a separate key just for Lemon Domains so you can delete it on its own.
Do I need to share my IONOS password?
No. Connecting by API uses an API key you create at IONOS, not your password. IONOS keys cannot be limited to read-only or to the Domains API: one key covers domains, DNS and SSL. Create a separate key just for Lemon Domains so you can delete it on its own. Keys are encrypted at rest. Lemon Domains only ever sends read requests. Or skip the API and paste your list or upload a CSV.
Can I track multiple IONOS accounts?
Yes. Add one connection per IONOS account, each with its own friendly name. Personal and business logins, sub-accounts, and client accounts all sit side by side in one dashboard.
Does Lemon Domains renew my IONOS domains?
No. Renewal still happens at IONOS. Lemon Domains tracks expiry dates and auto-renew status so you know exactly when to act, but the renewal button stays at IONOS.
Can AI assistants query my IONOS domains?
Yes. The Lemon Domains MCP server lets ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and any MCP client query your full portfolio, including IONOS domains, in plain English. Choose read-only or read-and-write access for each token.
Is IONOS ICANN-accredited?
Yes. IONOS is on the ICANN list of accredited registrars, so it can register generic extensions such as .com directly with the registries.
What is IONOS's IANA ID?
83. The IANA registrar ID appears in the registrar field of a domain's public record, so it shows which registrar a domain is with.
What other names does IONOS operate under?
Its accreditations are also held as IONOS SE. Domains registered through any of them can show those names as the registrar.
Is there an MCP server for IONOS domains?
Yes. Lemon Domains connects to IONOS by API and serves your IONOS domains through its remote MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and any MCP client can answer questions about them. It is independent of IONOS and not affiliated with it, so the same connection also covers your domains at every other registrar.
Does IONOS have an API?
Yes. Lemon Domains connects to IONOS by API and syncs your domain list every day, with expiry dates and renewal settings. Your AI assistant can then answer questions about those domains through the Lemon Domains MCP server.
What domain extensions does IONOS sell?
Its price list includes .com, .net, .org, .info, .me, .tv, .co.uk, .at, .de and .es, among others.
Does IONOS include WHOIS privacy?
Yes. IONOS hides your contact details in the public record at no extra cost, for the extensions whose registry allows it. Some country-code extensions, such as .us, don't allow privacy at all.
How do I contact IONOS support?
IONOS offers support by live chat, phone, email or tickets and help center (24/7). IONOS offers phone support. Its contact page is https://www.ionos.com/help/domains/.

In Domains, open Renewal & Transfer, select the domain and click Show Authorization Code. Turn off the transfer lock first. Then give the code to the new registrar to start the transfer.
