Frequently asked questions

How do I find out who hosts a website?

Enter the domain above. The checker looks up the addresses the website is served from and the network each one belongs to, and reads the site's own response, which often names the platform (Vercel, Netlify, Shopify, Squarespace and others). It shows the host, plus who runs the domain's DNS and who receives its email, which are often different companies.

Why does it say Cloudflare when my site is hosted somewhere else?

Cloudflare, Fastly, Akamai and other CDNs sit in front of a website: visitors connect to them and they fetch the pages from the real server. Only the CDN's addresses are public, so the real host can't be seen from outside. The site's owner can see it in their CDN account.

What's the difference between the website host, DNS host and email host?

The website host runs the server that sends the pages. The DNS host answers the question "where is this domain?" and points it at the website and mail servers. The email host receives the domain's email. A domain can use one company for all three, or three different ones, and each can be changed without the others.

What does an IP lookup show?

For any public IPv4 or IPv6 address: the network it belongs to and its autonomous system number (ASN), who holds the address block according to the regional internet registry (ARIN, RIPE NCC, APNIC, LACNIC or AFRINIC), the country it's registered in, its reverse DNS name, and whether it looks like hosting, a home internet provider, a mobile network or a VPN.

Is the country where the server actually is?

It's the country the address block is registered in, which usually matches where the servers are. Large networks and CDNs use addresses registered in one country all over the world, so for them it's a rough guide only.

What is reverse DNS?

Reverse DNS maps an IP address back to a name, the opposite of a normal lookup. Hosting companies often set it to a name that says which company or server the address belongs to, and mail servers use it to judge whether email is trustworthy.

Can my AI agent look up hosting?

Yes. The Lemon Domains MCP server has a lookup_hosting tool, the REST API serves the same lookup at GET /api/v1/hosting, and the lemon CLI runs it with lemon hosting example.com. Any lookup can also be fetched as Markdown or JSON with no account.

Know where every domain points.

Lemon Domains keeps every domain in one list across registrars, with its DNS host, email host and website host, and tells you when any of them change.
