Frequently asked questions

What is a WHOIS lookup?

A WHOIS lookup returns the registration details of a domain: which registrar manages it, when it was registered and when it expires, its status codes, and its nameservers. This tool uses RDAP, the modern, standardised successor to the classic WHOIS protocol.

Why don't I see the owner's name and contact details?

Since GDPR and ICANN's temporary specification, most registrant contact details are redacted in public WHOIS/RDAP. You will reliably see the registrar, dates, status, and nameservers, but personal contact data is generally hidden behind privacy protection.

What do the status codes mean?

Status codes like 'client transfer prohibited' or 'server hold' describe locks and states on the domain. Transfer-prohibited is a normal anti-hijacking lock. Hold or pending-delete states indicate a domain in trouble or on its way out.

Which domains are supported?

Any TLD that runs an RDAP server, which covers most major extensions (.com, .net, .org, .io, .ai, .app, and many more). Some country-code TLDs do not expose RDAP and will return no data.

Can I track a domain's expiry after looking it up?

Yes. Add it to Lemon Domains and we track expiry and renewal across every registrar, so the date you just looked up never sneaks past you.

Stop letting domains slip through the cracks.

Five minutes to import. A lifetime of not refreshing five registrar tabs.
